Scripture Spiritual Practice

Meditation

Lectio Divina

Step 1 - Read Scripture - Slowly and intuitively.

  • Read it aloud slowly and deliberately. You might like to read it more than once.

  • Focus on the words, paying attention to your feelings and impressions.

  • Often what will happen is a particular word or phrase or idea will just gently lift off the page. It will catch your mind’s attention or nudge you emotionally.

  • Or, as you’re reading, a picture will enter your mind’s eye, or a memory from your past, or an idea will come out of nowhere.

Step 2 - Meditate

  • Pause and reflect on the passage, letting the words sink in.

  • Take time to think about what part of the text stood out or resonated with you.

  • Ask yourself how the passage relates to your life and the lives of others. Reflect on the connections between the passage and your life and what God may be saying to you.

  • You may want to ask the Holy Spirit to explain something that you don’t quite understand

The idea is you want what you’ve read to come alive. To become more than just words on a page. You want it to become part of you – deep inside – you want it t transform you from the inside out.

Step 3 - Pray

  • Have a conversation with God, responding to the passage, telling him what we are hearing from him and expressing our feelings and needs.

  • You may just want to thank Him for His being with you.

Step 4 - Contemplate

  • Look up from the text and look into the eyes of God himself.

  • Rest in God's presence, letting go of words and images and simply enjoying the experience of being with Him.

  • This is a time for quiet reflection and letting go, where we simply dwell in the loving embrace of God.
